Lurking Equipment

Left-out equipment poses serious hazards to our customers and unsuspecting employees within the Service Industry. All managers must engage on this topic to ensure our sales areas are free of lurking equipment that is set up for a tragedy. The photograph shows a pallet jack left out unattended. Worse yet, it has been left in a situation where only the skids are visible from anyone approaching the corner. This is a trip hazard waiting to happen.

Left-out equipment like this also poses a hazard to kids who might play with the equipment and not realize the potential pinch points, crushing areas, and parts that might slam down or fall when probed.

Equipment should have a staging area that is preferably labeled or identifiable. Many times equipment can be roped off or put in a place where it is out of the way and out of sight of our younger customers who might be tempted to play on such things.

Protruding objects like what is seen here in the photograph violate most if not all walkway standards, ADA, and OSHA regulations pertaining to tripping hazards.
